The financial downturn is accelerating business interest in social media.
The global recession is turning out to be a global catalyst for accelerating changes in technology, marketing and advertising. Social media will be one of the beneficiaries of this change along with metered access to multi-tenant cloud environments like SaaS / PaaS / HaaS.
Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) works by leveraging blogs, online video, social networking, micro blogging and social bookmarking, aka social media. Social media happens to be dirt cheap when compared to traditional and mainstream advertising and PR campaigns.
Facebook is where the cool kids are today and by the looks of things that’s where many companies are also trying to maximize their ad dollars.
eMarketer today came out with the report, Retailers Get Social with Facebook
Facebook is the social media site of choice for many US online retailers, judging by an August 2008 study by Internet Retailer and Vovici. Nearly one-third of responding businesses said they had a Facebook page, compared with 27% that had a MySpace page and just over one-quarter that had a page on YouTube.

Here are 7 facebook applications for the enterprise.
- Worklight creates an intranet within facebook allowing members to publish and share news within groups.
- Faceforce is CRM for facebook.
- Convio brings online fundraising, email Marketing, advocacy, event fundraising to facebook.
- Buxfer allows for payment facilitation and money management within facebook.
- Alfresco Facebook Platform makes the Alfresco CMS all facebooky.
- Filefactory lets you share files at work on Facebook Fridays.
- Zoho Office enables office document management in facebook.
I’m curious to see what will happen with LinkedIn apps now. With 70% of businesses allowing social media in the enterprise, I believe we’ve reached a tipping point.

This amazing photo of a Japanese maple tree by ahp_ibanez reminds me of a favorite film, The Fountain.

Love that it’s silent. I’d prefer to see an troop of tiny cheap robots performing the job but this is a start.
Besides the quietude, I can see that there are multiple environmental benefits. No bagging: it’s pure mulch mower. Reduced fugitive emissions. Owners can cancel their US$40/week landscaping contract, and count the savings against the capital and operating cost of the Automower Hybrid (said to be around $20.00/year in electricity). Wonder what the payback period would be in California?

I’m being kind giving McCain Arizona. It’s now looking like he might lose his home state.

After spending a few years in Malaysia, whenever you hear top level ministers and the Prime Minister repeatedly declare that things are not that bad, things are actually bad. I’ve talked to shop keepers, hand phone dealers, car salesmen & real estate agents. They already know what the government is afraid to say, Malaysia is indeed in recession.
KUALA LUMPUR: The global economic slowdown is beginning to take a toll on the lifestyle of Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur and people are bracing themselves for difficult times. A member of the public said: “What I heard around in the market… even they are saying things are more expensive. They are buying less, going to supermarket less and business is slowing down a bit.” Another said: “I have cut down a lot on lifestyle expenses.”
I’ve noticed over the past several years the increasing trend of banks handing out packs of 3 and 4 credit cards to just about anyone. Retailers here have schemes whereby people can purchase appliances, computers and such for zero interest for the first 12 months, quite popular with consumers. The real economic danger here will be when people begin to mass default on credit debt.

According to PBS, China journalists notified authorities weeks before the news came out. This directive was issued during the Olympics.
China’s Propaganda Department — a censorship office that answers directly to the Communist Party’s Politburo — circulated a 21-point directive to the Chinese media on the eve of the Beijing Olympics declaring certain subjects off-limits for media coverage. Point 8 was very clear: “All subjects linked to food safety, such as mineral water that causes cancer, are off-limits.” In the face of worldwide distrust of the quality of its products, the Chinese government chose silence.
We’ve stopped buying ALL China foods. If it’s made in China, no thanks. Some of the produce we’re buying is probably still from China. This is hard to avoid when you are buying from a night market or place where there are no labels. We always wash produce off regardless of where we bought it. No more canned anything from China or any processed foods made in China.
Boycott food from China!

Swiss security researchers were able to detect keystrokes using 4 different methods from up to 65 feet away.
The researchers showed they can capture the words being typed on 11 different models of keyboards by monitoring the electromagnetic radiation emitted by those keyboards. The techniques work on PS /2, universal serial bus, and laptop keyboards. (That seems like just about everything).

I’m just wondering if development on Skype for OSX has shut down. It’s been about a year since the last update. What’s up with that? Maybe Skype 4 by 2009?

The most welcome feature for me in Snow Leopard is Outlook Exchange support built into Apple Mail. Having to use Entourage just to access an exchange server sucks. Let’s hope Apple is working hard on getting this feature rock solid. All the more reason for enterprise to adopt OSX.

Try placing a 1/2 inch 3 ring binder in between your lap and your notebook. This simple and cheap utilitarian solution is the best I’ve used for removing direct contact heat while using the macbook for extended periods. The keyboard angle is just right as well.

This is NOT photoshopped. The man actually made this zombie face in the final moments of the most important televised appearance of his political life. He is a Maverick! What if he’d performed the thriller routine? John McCain, you won’t get my vote but you’re invited to any future BBQ I have. Just leave Keating at home, he’s creepy. And tell Sarah, no moose. It’s hell to clean up the grill afterwards.

Protest, Art, or just wrong? I don’t know who is more stupid, McCain’s people for not doing background check on political leanings of photo journalists or Jill for putting herself in a position to possibly get sued or worse.
