For the past 2 months Celcom 3g constantly switches between HSDPA and WCDMA after 5 to 10 minutes of connection. Once the cycling between connection modes starts you cannot browse and must disconnect then reconnect, then wait a few minutes – repeat.
I contacted Celcom to find out what the problem was and they replied that they were ‘very sorry’ but that they were performing upgrades and I would be experiencing this problem through June. The service is quite expensive by local standards, 26 USD per month for up to 5GB of transfer monthly. I asked them to stop billing me until the service is reliable.
They called back 2 weeks later and said they can offer me a 5% discount. I let them know that I would be canceling the service if they could not offer a better discount until the time when they can offer me reliable service. I’m now waiting for their reply. Apparently the maximum discount they can offer for slow speeds is 5%. If you are calling Celcom about getting a rebate for poor service tell them your complaint is not about speed but line stability.
When HSDPA is working I am very satisfied with the service. I hope they can work something out and get upgrades completed quickly. Maxis offers mobile broadband service but I find that when you are actually mobile in a car or otherwise, Celcom service works better. For reference I experience the cycling WCDMA/HSDPA problem in PJ Section 14, Section 19 and many other parts of KL.

I have experienced the same problem also. Once my connection disconnect I have to restart my laptop otherwise I can’t connect it back. It turn me off. I got stuck with my job.
My Celcom connection was good at first, HSDPA or UMTS all the way. But starting earlier this month it has degraded to GPRS up until now and it sucks. I’m seriously thinking of migrating to P1 Wimax if this doesn’t improve soon.
Hi Afif, same here. I’m cancelling Celcom. Celcom customer support has been terrible. They call after 2 weeks and offer not explanation as to what is wrong. I have been hearing bad things about P1 as well. I just tested P1 Wimax at a clients house and apparently you need to have the modem right next to the window. No signal in the hall.
Well what i do when it toggles between 3G and HSDPA is to make sure i lock it the modem to 3G or WCDMA only NOT 3G or WCDMA preferred. another problem could be the modem as well, since there are so many imitation ones out there and i have friends who got cheated thinking it was the celcom service but in reality it was the modem which was the issue.
Hi Hutch, I’ve tried locking it to HSDPA and have tried alternate modems. Thanks for your comments though and the reminder to cancel. Unfortunately P1, Maxis and Digi are not much better. I’m finding that mobile broadband is hit and miss in Malaysia. If someone from Celcom would like to contact me and attempt to sort out my problem I’m happy to meet up. I’m on a mac here btw. Cheers.
