Evernote syncs notes on iPhone and Macbook

By llamasonic on April 2, 2009

Evernote syncs notes on iPhone and Macbook

OK, call me impressed. Thanks to Jan for linking me to Evernote, an app that let’s you snap photos, clip web pages and take notes across multiple platforms and have them all synced in the cloud. The coolest thing I see about it so far is the OCR that happens on their servers.

You can see I’ve searched twitter for Evernote buzz on my laptop then snapped a photo of my screen with the everphone iphone app. After a few moments the photo showed up on the Evernote desktop app and upon searching it all the text on the page is now indexed and searchable. Really cool.. I am liking this. There’s also safari and firefox addons for grabing web clips. Windows, Mac and mobile friendly.

Skype for iPhone

Skype for iPhone

The WSJ is reporting that Skype is finally being released for the iPhone. Check the AppStore Tuesday for the official release. Personally this is the most wanted app on my phone. I’m hoping it will work with backgrounder.

Celcom broadband slow and unstable

By llamasonic on March 24, 2009

Celcom broadband slow and unstable

For the past 2 months Celcom 3g constantly switches between HSDPA and WCDMA after 5 to 10 minutes of connection. Once the cycling between connection modes starts you cannot browse and must disconnect then reconnect, then wait a few minutes – repeat.

I contacted Celcom to find out what the problem was and they replied that they were ‘very sorry’ but that they were performing upgrades and I would be experiencing this problem through June. The service is quite expensive by local standards, 26 USD per month for up to 5GB of transfer monthly. I asked them to stop billing me until the service is reliable.

They called back 2 weeks later and said they can offer me a 5% discount. I let them know that I would be canceling the service if they could not offer a better discount until the time when they can offer me reliable service. I’m now waiting for their reply. Apparently the maximum discount they can offer for slow speeds is 5%. If you are calling Celcom about getting a rebate for poor service tell them your complaint is not about speed but line stability.

When HSDPA is working I am very satisfied with the service. I hope they can work something out and get upgrades completed quickly. Maxis offers mobile broadband service but I find that when you are actually mobile in a car or otherwise, Celcom service works better. For reference I experience the cycling WCDMA/HSDPA problem in PJ Section 14, Section 19 and many other parts of KL.

Clean air with indoor plants

Researcher Kamal Meattle along with NASA has concluded that these three plants, areca palm, mother-in-law’s tongue and money plant are the most effective at cleaning the air indoors and providing oxygen. Time to plant some in the bedroom. Video from TED here

Pattie Maes and Pranav Mistry demo wearable computing at TED

By llamasonic on March 13, 2009

Really amazing look at how close we are to wearable computing that does not get in the way and actually looks quite usable.

This demo — from Pattie Maes’ lab at MIT, spearheaded by Pranav Mistry — was the buzz of TED. It’s a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment. Imagine “Minority Report” and then some.

Ron Paul is the GOPs Howard Dean

By llamasonic on March 6, 2009

Ron Paul is the GOPs Howard Dean

I’m not one to give much advice to the other party, but at the end of the day we all benefit from a productive discourse and honestly I feel a little bad for just how screwed up their party is right now. The Republican party is dying it seems. I remember when Howard Dean was laughed out of town after Iowa in the 2004 election. He ended up coming back and saving the Democratic Party leading it to multiple waves of victory with his 50 State Strategy. I don’t see Ron Paul doing that for the GOP but I do think he capable of pulling off a true revolt within their party.

Dear republicans, Ron Paul is your Obi Wan – your only hope.
